Challenges stem from allowing players not on a team’s roster—Non-Roster (NR) players—to play in League games. Still, the League believes the benefits (e.g., helping to ensure that teams have enough players to avoid forfeits, introducing new players to the League) outweigh those challenges. Captains (or acting Captains) are expected to know the NR players being used by their team and are responsible for adhering to the following procedures. Violations may subject the player, the Captain (or acting Captain), and/or the team to disciplinary action. For teams to utilize NR players, they must follow the parameters laid out below. Specific details on usage/restrictions of NR players, Areena App requirements, and a few administrative matters follow the form.
Form Submission. Please submit this form one day prior to your team’s game, preferably by 5:00pm so that any issues can be addressed in advance of game day. Earlier submissions cause confusion due to roster changes.
- Late Additions. If adding a player on Sunday, the form must be submitted by kickoff. If a player is forgotten, submit the form as soon as possible.
- Roster Players (Forgot Shirt). If a roster player forgets their League shirt, such players must be listed on the NR form; the form may be submitted shortly after the game to avoid start delays.
Once submitted, you should get an email with a copy for your records. Please keep the email in case it does not go through to the League and needs to be forwarded. Thank you!
Usage/Restrictions. NR players are generally permitted during the regular season, but are prohibited in playoff matches (except for goalies, with approval). Teams are limited to a maximum of eight (8) NR players per game. A team’s total game-day roster, including NR players, generally should not exceed seventeen (17) players; the opposing team may utilize this limit by asking the referees to enforce it.
- Prohibited Players. Certain male players are prohibited from playing as NR players due to their potential impact on game outcomes.
- Top Scorers. Players on the League leaderboard for the current or two prior seasons may not play as an NR player for a team in the same or lower division.
- Division Restrictions. A roster player may not play as an NR player for a team more than one division lower than their own.
- Professional. Current or recent professional players (within 12 months) are prohibited.
- Note: Prohibited players may play solely to avoid a forfeit (if the team has fewer than 8 players). Goals scored by prohibited players will be recorded by the referees as they normally would. Such a goal (or a goal clearly assisted by a NR player) will be disallowed after the game.
Areena App Requirements. All players, including all NR players, must be shown on the team’s roster in Areena for a given game. A NR player not on the app is considered ineligible, which may result in team sanctions. There are generally three categories of players who are considered NR players:
- Not Tied to a Team. Individuals not on a team’s roster (paid or unpaid). These players must join the Areena app as early as possible (preferably before the NR form is submitted).
- Tied to a Team. Paid roster players (and possibly unpaid players) already on a team’s roster in the Areena app likely cannot move to another team. These players must be added manually by the League or a referee.
- Roster Players, No League Shirt. For the purposes of this provision, any roster player not wearing their assigned League shirt is considered a NR player. (There is a box to mark on the NR Form for such players).
Administrative Matters. Referees must be able to readily identify NR players.
- NR Shirt Color. NR players must wear a shirt of the same or a substantially similar color to the team. If wearing a spare League shirt, it must be worn inside out.
- Blue Cards. Referees will assign a “Blue Card” in the app for tracking purposes.
- NR Players. These Blue Cards have no effect on the player or the team.
- Roster Players. Getting 2 Blue Cards for missing a shirt results in a 1-game suspension.
- Former Roster Players. Former roster players wearing their old League shirts must wear them inside out. Failure to do so will result in a three-game ban from playing for that team.
